A new report commissioned by Delaware County Council has found that Sunoco Pipeline’s Mariner East 2 poses no great risk to area residents, writes Kathleen Carey for the Daily Times.

According to the risk assessment conducted by G-2 Integrated Services, people are more likely to die from traffic accidents or falling down the stairs than accidents related to pipelines.

Last week, the 79-page report – entitled “Mariner East 2 Pipeline and Existing Adelphia Pipeline Risk Assessments” – was submitted to County Council by Delaware County Emergency Services Director Timothy Boyce. County officials are planning to hold a public unveiling of the report together with a G-2 representative.

G-2 Integrated Solutions provides the pipeline operators, utility companies, and others related to the energy industry with the expertise to better manage risk, assure compliance, and optimize performance.

Its analysis “concluded that the individual fatality risk levels for both the Mariner East 2 and Adelphia pipelines are similar to other common types of risks such as traffic accidents and house fires.”

It found that a person is twenty times more likely to die from a traffic accident or falling down stairs. They are also 35 times more likely to die from a house fire than they are from an incident relating to the Mariner East 2 pipeline operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The Mariner East 2 pipeline is expected to be in service by the end of this year, carrying ethane, propane, and other petroleum products to markets in Pennsylvania and elsewhere. These products, known as Natural Gas Liquids (NGLs), are used in many applications, including heating, fuel, and the production of plastic.
