Two First-Time Politicians Vie for Chester County’s Open Seat in U.S. House

Two first-time politicians – Democrat Chrissy Houlahan, a third-generation military veteran, and Republican Greg McCauley, a tax attorney and former owner of nine Wendy’s franchises – are vying for the Sixth Congressional District seat, writes Claudia Vargas for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The seat is open after U.S. Rep. Ryan Costello decided not to seek re-election.

While the district used to skew more toward the GOP, the newly drawn map includes Reading and other parts of Berks County that add more Democrat-leaning voters. There’s also a fifth of registered voters that is not affiliated with either party.

Today, the district represents a mix of suburban wealth, urban poverty, and big agricultural sectors. However, the majority of the discussions between the two candidates have focused on national topics, instead of local ones. These have included healthcare, immigration, gun control, climate change, and taxes.

“These are two new people who really need to get out there and communicate across party lines,” said State Sen. Andy Dinniman. “The majority of people in Chester County are moderates.”
