Lifeguards are hard to come by. Beaches and parks-and-recreation departments all across the country have been reporting a shortage of lifeguards.

“Glinting with sweat and suntan lotion under a summer sun, lifeguards once reigned as gods of the beach, perched high above the swim-suited masses,” the Boston Globe recently wrote. “But … lifeguard chairs (now) stand empty, white, and skeletal.”

And not just during the summer.

Closer to home, the YMCA of Greater Brandywine has been impacted by the nationwide shortage of lifeguards.

Even as the school year begins and the weather cools, lifeguards are needed. YMCA of Greater Brandywine branches have multiple pools open throughout the school year at Upper Main Line, West Chester, Lionville, Kennett, Brandywine, and Jennersville.

With the economy doing so well and unemployment so low, it’s hard to fill the part-time position of lifeguard. However, these positions are excellent for retired people, college students, home-schooled teens, stay-at-home moms and dads, and anyone who needs a second job.

The YMCA of Greater Brandywine, one of the largest employers in Chester County, offers several advantages to lifeguarding at its eight branches.

YMCAs are open long hours, making it easy to fit a part-time job as a lifeguard into a person’s schedule. All shifts, from weekdays to weekends, are open, although weekdays are the top priority for the YMCA of Greater Brandywine.

Free training and free memberships come with part-time positions at the YMCA, where staff is welcoming and supportive, like a family.
