Food Science Major from Downingtown Helps PSU’s Famed Creamery Create New Ice Cream Flavor

White Out is a blend of popcorn-flavored ice cream and white chocolate chips.

Downingtown native Abigail Rule, a food science major at Penn State, helped the renowned Creamery where she interns decide on a new flavor of ice cream to honor the Nittany Lions, writes Keith Schweigert for Fox 43.

The Creamery unveiled the new flavor, White Out, which is a combination of popcorn-flavored ice cream and white chocolate chips. Now, in addition to being offered by the scoop at the Creamery, it’s available in half-gallon containers and three-gallon tubs, both at the shop and online.

“White Out has become a huge Penn State Athletics tradition, so it only made sense for us to help promote and complement their efforts,” said Jim Brown, assistant manager of the Creamery. “We think this new flavor is going to be a touchdown with fans.”

Brown and the rest of the management team challenged the staff to come up with new and fresh ideas that would pay tribute to the school’s football team. Rule then conducted taste tests on the new products, with White Out emerging as the clear winner.
