A hamburger-shaped hot dog invented by Tony Luke Jr. had a successful debut on QVC earlier this month, writes Sheri Berkery for the South Jersey Courier-Post.

Luke, who has been in the food business for decades, thought of round hot dogs when his son ran out of hot dog buns during a barbecue but still had plenty of hamburger buns left.

“That has happened to me like 100 times,” said Luke. “It’s a real inconvenience.”

That was a light-bulb moment for Luke, owner of the Tony Luke’s Cheesesteaks franchise. So he came up with the round hot dog, which he is currently promoting on social media using hashtag #OriginalRoundDog.

His first big test was the QVC launch at the start of the month, and the innovator was rightfully nervous. However, he had nothing to worry about as the dogs distributed through Rastelli Market Fresh sold out in record time.

The QVC presentation also got restaurants interested.

“You wouldn’t believe how many are calling me,” said Luke.

The round hot dogs are expected to be available from the Tony Luke’s franchises early next year.
