Chesterbrook’s AmerisourceBergen Receives Another Subpoena Related to Opioids

By

Chesterbrook-based AmerisourceBergen received another grand jury subpoena from federal prosecutors in May, writes Catherine Dunn for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

This is part of the ongoing fallout that one of the nation’s largest wholesale drug distributors has been facing as America deals with an opioid crisis.

The subpoena was sent by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida. According to AmerisourceBergen’s SEC filings, it has requested documents “primarily relating to certain opioid products and communications with a pharmaceutical manufacturer.”

The filing is another addition to the list of subpoenas the company has received over the last nine months from federal authorities. AmerisourceBergen said it is currently in the process of responding to the subpoena. But, according to the company, opioid products only account for around two percent of sales.

AmerisourceBergen also disclosed that it spent around $39 million last quarter on costs related to litigation, primarily from “opioid lawsuits, investigations, and related initiatives.” The amount equals around 10 percent of the $389.2 million in operating income AmerisourceBergen earned in the same quarter.
