Jade Boruk, 12, a student at Charles F. Patton Middle School in the Unionville-Chadds Ford School District, overcame a rare developmental disorder to earn a black belt in karate, writes Joseph Santoliquito for PhillyVoice.
Jade was diagnosed with “Williams syndrome” when she was two years old. The developmental disorder can present with learning issues, unique personality characteristics, distinctive facial features, and cardiovascular problems.
After the diagnosis, Jade’s parents, John and Kristine Boruk, planned for everything, including physical, speech, and occupational therapies, but treat their daughter like any other child.
And she has flourished.

“I can’t say enough good things about the Unionville-Chadds Ford School District,” said John Boruk, a sports anchor at NBC Sports Philadelphia. “They have been tremendous.”
Jade is the first person with special needs to earn a black belt in karate at the East Coast Karate Institute in Glen Mills.
