Because just about everyone carries a mobile phone these days, the ability to extract data from electronic devices has become a critical crime-fighting tool for modern law-enforcement officials, according to a report in the Daily Local News.

Since 2003, the Chester County District Attorney’s Office in West Chester has operated a Computer Forensics Unit (CFU) to deal with digital evidence. The CFU processes electronic devices for all 46 police agencies in Chester County. It also handles all electronic evidence for the D.A.’s Office.

Its caseload has grown from 19 jobs in 2003 to 331 jobs in 2017.

“Computer forensics is a growing and vital field for law enforcement,” said Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan. “Whether we are investigating drug dealing, child pornography, white-collar fraud, or violent crimes, the ability to retrieve and interpret electronic data is crucial. We are lucky to have such resources available in Chester County.”

The CFU is located in the Chester County Justice Center in West Chester. It requires sophisticated computer hardware and software, electronic storage capacity, and a climate-controlled environment. Construction of the new CFU lab facility was authorized by the Chester County Commissioners in 2014.
