Chester native Jamai Springfield is moving forward on Team Alicia Keys on NBC’s “The Voice,” after he wowed the famous singer with his performance during the blind auditions, writes Nick Vadala for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Springfield performed a cover of Usher’s “U Got It Bad,” which impressed both Keys and Kelly Clarkson. Ultimately, he chose Keys, who said he has “a style that’s really your own.”

Springfield, 29, was raised by his grandmother after losing his mother at a young age. At 16, he launched J Telegrams, a singing telegram business that is still operating today. He began his singing career after winning a high school talent show and used the prize money to record a demo.

Since then, he has released several singles – including “Need U” – and his music is available on Bandcamp.

After the auditions, Springfield posted on Twitter, saying that while advancing makes him happy, he would give it up immediately to have his mother back.

“Such an amazing time in my life right now,” he posted with a photo of his late mother. “But I would trade it all just to see you again.”
