Chester County is bucking the regional trend as the only suburban county with more population growth than Philadelphia, writes Alfred Lubrano for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Between 2016 and 2017, the City of Brotherly Love saw its population increase by 6,098 residents, marking the 11th consecutive year of growth.

The statistics indicate that more people moved out of the city than into it from 2016 to 2017, as 10,240 people settled in Philadelphia, while 10,817 people moved out, resulting in a loss of 577 people. However, the population growth is actually from birth rates exceeding death rates across the city.

For the last seven years, population gains in Philadelphia have outpaced those in the suburban counties. This trend has continued everywhere this year, except in Chester County.

Chester County recorded a population growth of 3.9 percent, slightly above Philadelphia’s 3.4 percent. Experts cannot point to a specific reason that can account for the county’s uptick.
