WCU Live! to Host Evening of Award-Winning Irish Music
WCU Live! will welcome Goitse, an award-winning quintet, for an evening of original and traditional Irish music that the whole family can enjoy on Saturday, Feb. 24 at Emilie K. Asplundh Concert Hall.
The five talented performers who comprise Goitse – pronounced “go-with-cha,” a Gaelic Irish greeting for “come here” – make music that Irish Music Magazine describes as “brimming with energy and creative zeal.”
The group has released four critically acclaimed recordings and maintains a year-round touring schedule that regularly includes stops in Ireland, the U.K., Germany, France, and the U.S.
Headlining the group is Áine McGeeney, who enchants audiences with her vocals and skills on the fiddle. Described as a “feisty fiddler” and possessing the “voice of an angel,” she is known by Irish music fans around the world and has performed as the lead fiddle player with Michael Flatley’s renowned “Lord of the Dance” show.
Tadhg Ó Meachair, an All-Ireland piano champion, provides the piano and piano accordion to the group’s distinctive sound. He’s also a composer and has collaborated on several albums with legendary Irish singers.

Next is Colm Phelan, a world champion Bodhrán player, who contributes percussion to the group and will introduce the audience to that unique type of Irish frame drum.
South Philadelphia’s Conal O’Kane, who graduated from the University of Limerick with a B.A. in Irish music and dance, lends a driving rhythm to the group as one of the up-and-coming guitarists of his generation.
Rounding out the ensemble is recording artist Alan Reid, who will contribute his banjo and mandolin to the evening of lively entertainment.
Goitse has been named Live Ireland Radio’s “Traditional Group of the Year” and the Chicago Irish American News’ “Group of the Year” and has won the prestigious Freiburger International Leiter award from music critics in Germany. The singular sound of their own compositions interspersed with traditional tunes from the countryside of Ireland and abroad prompted Irish Music Magazine to call their performance “a country mile ahead of anything we’ve seen this past five years.”
