Bon-Ton Will Shut 42 Stores Nationwide

By

The Bon-Ton plans to close 42 stores nationwide, including eight in Pennsylvania, according to a report in the Central Penn Business Journal.

The department-store chain will be shuttering its Carlisle, Dubois, Erie, Johnstown, Selinsgrove, State College, Stroudsburg, and Trexlertown locations in the Keystone State. Currently, Wisconsin is the only state that will see a higher number of closures than Pennsylvania with nine.

According to Christine Hojnacki, Bon-Ton spokesperson, the closures will affect around 1,860 employees. They were originally announced last fall as part of the company’s plan to shore up its sagging finances.

“As part of the comprehensive turnaround plan we announced in November, we are taking the next steps in our efforts to move forward with a more productive store footprint,” said Bill Tracy, Bon-Ton’s president and CEO. “Including other recently announced store closures, we expect to close a total of 47 stores in early 2018.”

Store closing sales began on Feb. 1 and will run for 10-12 weeks before the locations are finally shuttered.
