Wawa’s largest store, not to mention its first-ever in Washington, D.C., is a big hit with new and old customers alike, writes Justin Wm. Moyer for the Washington Post.

The 9,200-square-foot store opened last week at 1111 19th St. NW in Washington’s central business district.

“I get everything in one place,” said new customer G. Wong. “It is a lunch fantasy.”

The store ran out of soft pretzels, arguably Wawa’s signature item, but that didn’t really matter. In fact, Wong said, he’d already had lunch. Maybe he would buy a coffee. He was mainly there to marvel.

“If you grew up with Wawa, you appreciate it deeply,” said Jessica Feldman, a Pennsylvania native now living in D.C.

Feldman noted the store’s special touches: subway-tiled walls, exposed ventilation ducts, and wood finishes.

“This is obviously catering to a bit more upscale crowd,” she said. “It’s not like other Wawas.”

“We are thrilled to finally spread our wings into the Washington, D.C., market and begin fulfilling the lives of more customers and communities than ever before with this all-new store design,” said Wawa CEO Chris Gheysens.
