The Philadelphia region will be promoted as “Cellicon Valley” in an ad blitz at this week’s J.P. Morgan Healthcare Investor Conference in San Francisco, writes John George for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

The annual gathering is the nation’s largest event on life sciences and healthcare. More than 8,000 attendees visit the conference, including investors, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical firm representatives, healthcare service providers, and medical-device companies from across the globe.

The name is a play on Silicon Valley and touts the region’s robust life sciences community and its strength in cell and gene therapy. The campaign will focus on the new cell and gene therapies that were developed by Spark Therapeutics and Penn Medicine and approved by the FDA last year.

The advertising campaign is being run by the University City Science Center and Life Sciences Pennsylvania.

“We saw this event as a great opportunity to differentiate Philadelphia and the scientific and business prowess in cell and gene therapy that exists here and started here,” said Christopher Molineaux, president and CEO of Life Sciences Pennsylvania.
