Internet Search Company Based in Paoli Extends Its Privacy Protections

By

DuckDuckGo, the Internet search company based in Paoli that has built its reputation on promises not to sell or store its users’ search histories or other private information, plans to extend its privacy protections beyond its own site by introducing a browser extension and smartphone apps, writes Steven Melendez for Fast Company Magazine.

The browser extension – available for Firefox, Chrome, and Safari – and smartphone apps will filter out tracking code, automatically direct users to encrypted HTTPS versions of sites, and provide privacy ratings for websites. Users will also be able to search DuckDuckGo from within the extension.

DuckDuckGo is supported by ads, but they are linked only to the keywords in individual searches, not to prior searches on the site or behavior elsewhere on the Web.

Currently, when users leave the search page and go to other online content, they are exposed to the monitoring mechanisms other sites use, including code from tracking networks that cause targeted ads to follow users on the Internet.

“When you click beyond the search results to other sites, you’re subject to privacy policies there,” said DuckDuckGo founder and CEO Gabriel Weinberg.

The browser extension and smartphone apps will address this issue.
