Baldwin’s Book Barn

Baldwin’s Book Barn in West Chester has been in operation for more than seven decades, and it has elevated the book-buying experience to a whole new level, writes Kate Chadwick for the W.C. Press.

The store was founded in 1946 by William and Lilla Baldwin in a huge stone barn that was a part of a dairy farm built in 1822.

The bookstore is as fascinating as it is vast. Approximately 300,000 books are housed in the huge rooms and corridors on its five floors. New visitors are handed a map that outlines the location of books in every category imaginable, from modern literature and history to hobbies and cookbooks.

The Book Barn also has a huge selection of letters, photos, maps, manuscripts, antiques, fine art, and prints.

The owners have also left a number of antique chairs scattered throughout for anyone who needs a few minutes of rest while browsing the extensive collection.

“People come in here and they don’t want to leave,” said manager Carol Rauch. “Many have asked to stay overnight. It’s true!”
