Wawa has opened its largest store to date, this one in Washington, D.C., writes Stephanie Farr for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

A string trio played in front of the juice-and-yogurt display case, and customers waited in a line that stretched around the block at the grand opening in Washington’s central business district.

The store is Wawa’s first in D.C., and at 9,200 square feet, is the convenience-store chain’s largest.

Wawa spokeswoman Lori Bruce said the choice to put its “largest store – for now” in D.C. was in no way an affront to the Philadelphia region.

“It wasn’t a matter of choosing one or the other,” she said. “It happens to be the largest based on the available space.”

Bruce said Wawa has plenty of excitement planned for the Philadelphia area during the next year, including opening three new locations in Center City. It’s also eyeing a possible location in the Public Ledger building at Sixth and Chestnut streets near Independence Hall.
