Kennett Square’s Fifth Annual Mushroom Drop Expected to Draw Thousands
Thousands of people are expected to gather in Kennett Square to usher in the New Year with the annual Mushroom Drop, writes Fran Maye for The Pottstown Mercury.
A 500-pound, stainless-steel mushroom will slowly drop as the final 10 seconds of the year are counted down.
“People are excited,” said Kathi Lafferty, one of the organizers for Midnight in the Square. “This is a tradition now.”

The free event starts at 6:30 PM at State and Union streets with a live musical performance, while the Garage Youth Center will have entertainment for children.
Beer will be provided by the Kennett Brewing Company, while a food vendor will offer snacks like soft pretzels, hot chocolate, and coffee.
Visitors can park their vehicles at the Exelon and Kennett High School parking lots, as free shuttle buses will run from there to Broad and State streets. Lafferty emphasized that for security, trucks will be strategically placed on all sides of the streets and backpacks are banned.
