Downingtown East High School graduate Vamshi Voruganti, a senior majoring in industrial engineering at Penn State, was a member of the winning team at the 3M “Invent a New Future Challenge,” writes Carolyn Cushwa for Penn State News.
The international competition took place in July at 3M’s global headquarters in Minnesota, and brought together national finalists from 12 participating countries.

The 3M competition is for students who are in the final year of their undergraduate studies or those pursuing a graduate degree. Teams are given the task of assessing a unique 3M situation, creating a solution, and then defending their recommendations.
The focus of the final round was on workplace diversity and inclusion. Teams were tasked with presenting a business case for diversity and recommendations on the different ways 3M could improve on its efforts in this arena.
“This experience deeply affected me,” said Voruganti. “I’ve always known that diversity and inclusion were ‘important,’ but this was the first time I directly thought about it.”
