A risky move helped Chesterbrook’s Deacom revolutionize its enterprise resource planning software and secured its ongoing success, writes Marielle Mondon for Technical.ly.

Five years ago, Jay Deakins, the company’s founder, green-lighted the investment in time and resources to rewrite the entire software on a more flexible and scalable framework. He believed this would encourage ongoing development and ensure customers never had outdated technology.

To achieve this, the company moved the ERP software from Microsoft Visual FoxPro to a .NET platform. As part of the platform migration project, the company’s developers also gave the user interface an overhaul.

This required more than six million lines of code to be moved from the original platform to the new one, while ensuring customers had the same functionality during the process. However, the success of the upgrade made it possible for the company to continue expanding, while attracting the best talent in the industry.

“We started the project with just 18 employees total, and today we are growing at over 110, 24 of which are developers,” said Sheridan Bulger, Deacom’s Software Operations Manager.
