James H. Mullen Jr. – the president of Allegheny College in Meadville, approximately 35 miles south of Erie – presented the inaugural Allegheny College Prize for Civility in Public Life in Pennsylvania to Lamb McErlane attorney Alan Novak.

Novak, the former chairman of Pennsylvania’s Republican party, received the award along with T.J. Rooney, the former Democratic chairman, at a recent dinner in Hershey that annually gathers 2,000 political, business, and labor leaders from across the Commonwealth.

“This is a humbling moment I never imagined,” said Novak. “Not because T.J. and I are former political rivals, but because of the great friendship we discovered despite our differences. We want to thank Allegheny College for not only recognizing the need for civility in public discourse, but ‘the how’ in trying to achieve it.”

At Lamb McErlane, Novak focuses his practice on business and municipal law, including zoning, real estate transactions, business and corporate formation, counsel and litigation, and government relations. He has also served as solicitor for numerous townships, boroughs, and municipal authorities.

“We are thrilled for Alan,” said Joel L. Frank, Lamb McErlane’s Managing Partner. “We congratulate him on this extraordinary and appropriate honor.”

Novak also serves as President of Novak Strategic Advisors, a government and public affairs firm based in Harrisburg. The firm offers comprehensive, strategic government affairs and grassroots solutions to real-world business needs of clients ranging from Fortune 500 companies to regional businesses. He is also a partner at the RooneyNovak Group, which helps organizations navigate the divisions in government to end stalemates and build consensus in order to achieve their goals.
