Independence Blue Cross members will have in-network access to three Chester County hospitals as part of its new three-year contract with Tower Health, writes John George for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

Brandywine, Jennersville, and Phoenixville hospitals were part of the five-hospital acquisition Tower Health made from Community Health Systems earlier this month.

“We are confident that this agreement will serve as the foundation for a strong relationship between our two organizations,” said president and CEO of Tower Health Clint Matthews and Dr. Anthony V. Coletta, president of Independence Blue Cross Facilitated Health Networks, in a joint statement.

Earlier this week, Matthews said the health system had not been able to reach a new contract with Independence, as the health insurer wanted a noncompete clause and reduced payment rates.

The finalized deal got rid of the noncompete clause, allowing Tower Health to continue its cooperation with UPMC Health Plan on developing insurance products.

“It’s a win for the patients, a win for the community, a win for Independence Blue Cross, and a win for Tower Health,” said Matthews.
