Rustin High School Pitcher a Coveted Prospect as Major League Baseball Draft Nears
A school of baseball scouts is swimming after West Chester Rustin High School’s Chris McMahon, and the University of Miami-bound star is also high on the list of the Miami Marlins.
McMahon is the top-ranked prospect in Pennsylvania, with only 14 other right-handed, high school pitchers ranked ahead of him nationwide as the June 12 Major League Baseball draft approaches, according to a Fish Stripes report by Andrew Meyer.
He plays well at any position for Rustin, but scouts are most impressed by his 95-mph fastball.
“Not only do I think I’m a better pitcher, I just love pitching, having the ball in my hands, having control of the game and control of what I do,” he said.

And despite the constant pressure of scouting eyes on the mound — McMahon had more than 20 pro scouts watching when he threw a no-hitter earlier this month — everything seems to fade away when a batter steps up to the plate.
“Enjoy it. Just worry about the baseball part first,” he offered as advice to other young prospects. “If you worry about the other stuff (what the scouts think), your performance won’t follow.”
Depending upon which round McMahon is drafted in, and the signing bonus he’s offered, he may choose to skip college and immediately become a professional.
The Golden Knights play Wednesday, May 24 in the second round of the District One Class 5A playoffs.
