Gawthrop Greenwood Partner Volunteers Time to Help Immigrants Learn English

By

Maureen Mackay is a board member at the Volunteer English Program, which helps immigrants learn English and American cultural understanding.

Just a few years ago, Gawthrop Greenwood partner Maureen Mackay was volunteering a couple of hours a month tutoring adults in the English language.

Now, she’s a board member at the Volunteer English Program, a West Chester-based organization that fulfills an unspoken mandate to welcome any and all immigrants and refugees who seek to empower themselves through English language skills and American cultural understanding.

Mackay’s passion is ensuring that VEP’s services remain available and accessible to those who live and work in Chester County.

“It’s truly rewarding work that has a significant and immediate impact, not only on the families we work with directly, but also on the community as a whole,” said Mackay, a member of Gawthrop Greenwood’s Family Law practice. “VEP remains the only program in Chester County that is exclusively dedicated to providing free, one-to-one tutoring for English language acquisition and American cultural understanding.”

Gawthrop Greenwood has been a supporter of VEP for more than 15 years, with attorneys volunteering their time and expertise as VEP board members and board chair.

The firm is also a proud supporter of the Volunteer English Program’s Celebratory Fundraising Dinner and Musical Revue. This year’s theme – “Building the Chester County Community” – celebrates 31 years of defining achievements by VEP students, tutors, volunteers, and community partners.
