Instructional Designer at WCU Wins iBook of the Year at Author Conference

By

Marc Drumm

WCU-2c_logo-CMYK_outlinesHe took helpful examples of how social technology can enhance learning — and published it in a cutting-edge technological format that, you guessed it, enhances learning.

The result: the Best iBook of the Year award from the iBooks Author Conference.

Written by an instructional designer in West Chester University’s Office of Distance Education, “Ten Ways Teachers Tame Twitter” by Marc Drumm leverages Apple’s iBooks Author publishing tool.

“Readers can actually interact with the book: play audio and video, touch different areas of an image to find more information, rotate three-dimensional models, and quiz themselves on their understanding of the content,” Drumm said. “This was my first time creating a Multi-Touch book, so I was trying to keep it simple, and primarily used the media widget for including audio and video.”

And simple it was. After finishing his research and writing, “it took me just part of an afternoon to publish a book to the online (iBooks) stores in 51 different countries,” he said. “How long would it take to do that with a printed book?”
