WCU Alumnus Joey Wendle Scores in MLB Debut
A 24-hour whirlwind on Wednesday ended at home plate when former West Chester University baseball player Joey Wendle scored a run in his Major League Baseball debut.
Wendle was called up from the AAA Nashville Sounds to start for the Oakland A’s in their series finale with the Astros in Houston.
The former WCU star and NCAA Division II national champion reached base on an error and later scored a run to cap his first at-bat, according to an Inside the A’s report by John Hickey.
“Joey earned the respect of everyone when he was playing at West Chester,” WCU Head Coach Jad Prachniak said in a news alert from the college. “He played extremely hard. He treated people well and was the ultimate teammate. When Joey got drafted, I knew he would do everything in his power to maximize his chances of getting the opportunity to play at the Major League level. I am so happy that he is getting the opportunity to live out that dream.”
Wendle is the 10th WCU player to do so, and the first since 2007.
