QVC, West Chester’s TV shopping giant, is preparing to open its first West Coast distribution center in Ontario, California, writes Andrew Asch for California Apparel News.

The cross-channel retailer announced the grand opening of its new compound, located about 40 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. The new site is expected to reach full capacity in four years with over a million square-feet of space and around 1,000 employees.

QVC currently runs other distribution centers around the country in Suffolk, Lancaster, Rocky Mount, and Florence. The new site will handle over 20 percent of QVC’s total shipments along with the exisiting distribution network which ships 570,000 units a day.

The goal of the new center is to deliver orders quickly and more efficiently to people on the West Coast, said James Reid, Vice President of Distribution Operations at QVC.

The company is also seeing more of its profits coming from internet shopping. According to its second quarter results, QVC’s American e-commerce revenue grew by 11 percent to $727 million, with e-commerce accounting for just over half of its total U.S. revenue.

QVC also saw a two percent increase in total revenue to $1.4 billion for the second quarter, despite experiencing a slight deceleration in demand across the country.

“As a result, our near-term perspective is more cautious,” said Mike George, QVC’s President and CEO.
