Pyknic, the fun online food-themed clothing company, is opening its first brick-and mortar store at 11 a.m. in Downingtown this Saturday, writes Brian McCullough for Daily Local News.

Owner Stephen Thompson realized a childhood dream of owning his own company by creating Pyknic. Its popular clothing takes a light hearted shot at excessively health conscious trends, with slogans such as “Count blessings, not calories” and “Death before decaf” printed on them.

The food-centric lifestyle brand, which was a runner-up in Bloomberg Businessweek’s America’s Best Young Entrepreneurs in 2010, has since developed a worldwide following. Its products have also been featured in well-known blogs and publications such as Buzzfeed, Refinery29, Nylon Magazine, Vogue, and ELLE.

While Pyknic products can be found on the shelves of retailers like Urban Outfitters, PacSun, and Zumiez, Thompson is ready for the next step, his own store.

“I always deep down wanted to have a store,” he said. “Some of my fondest memories growing up were of going to the grocery store and the guy there flipping burgers, it always brought people together.”

After considering West Chester, Thompson decided a Downingtown location would have a greater impact and found the perfect spot at 215 W. Lancaster Ave.

In addition to Pyknic products, the store will also offer other food centered brands including Bai’s antioxidant-infused drinks, Candelle’s all natural soy candles and Justin’s Peanut Butter.

“This is just a bonus, that we were able to open up a store in this town,” he said. “It feels like we could definitely contribute to reviving Downingtown.”
