The Stewart Huston Charitable Trust established by the Lukens Steel Company’s founding family is providing $600,000 in local grants this year, writes Brian McCullough for Daily Local News.

“The organizations which have been selected to receive grants enlighten, inspire and support our community,” said Scott G. Huston, Executive Director of the Trust.

“It’s a true honor for us to continue on the path Stewart Huston set out on over a half-century ago, in creating an endowment to lift up those who need it most.”

The biggest beneficiary this year is the National Iron & Steel Heritage Museum, which has been awarded $200,000. Executive Director of the Museum, James D. Ziegler, said the grant is essential in helping continue public programs including “Coatesville Rolls into World War I” and the upcoming “300 Years of Iron and Steel Making in Pennsylvania.”

The museum also hosts a number of school tours each year for students who come to learn about the science, technology, engineering, and math needed to make steel.

Another major recipient of this year grants is Life Transforming Ministries which will receive $100,000, while the Chester County Historical Society, which is of special interest to the trust due its work preserving the historic heart of Coatesville, has been awarded $15,000.

Other grants include $10,000 for Habitat for Humanity of Chester County, and $5,000 each to the Chester County Food Bank and Chester County Women’s Services.

“I think the organizations we fund are making an impact,” commented Huston. “These are all great organizations. We’re happy to help organizations that help those in need.”
