Physical inactivity is not just an issue in the United States, but has become a pandemic in the world. More children and adults are obese, spend excessive amounts of time being sedentary and have overall declining health. In fact, according to a report published in the journal Lancet, physical inactivity causes one in 10 premature deaths across the globe – this is just slightly less than deaths from smoking. Inactivity also leads to many chronic diseases including heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and certain cancers.

If you want to break free from the physical inactivity cycle and protect the health and well-being of your family follow these simple tips today.

5 Tips to Get Active Together

  • Limit time on electronics.

Make it a house rule for everyone to have limited time on electronics. That includes phones, computers, television, video games, iPads, tablets and more. This applies to children and adults alike. Children look to adults as role models. Be sure you’re setting the right example.

  • Get presents that encourage activity.

Buy presents that encourage activity. From tennis rackets and softballs to jump ropes and kites to a membership at your local YMCA, there are gifts to give your family active and spend quality time together.

  • Take a walk.

Walking is the most popular form of exercise in the United States and also the easiest for everyone to do. Make it a habit to take a walk together as a family after dinner.

  • Make it a family affair.

When families are active together it promotes more bonding between all members as well as improves the health of everyone. Take up an activity you can do as a family such as biking, swimming, playing tennis or hiking. Local YMCAs offer numerous programs for all ages and fitness levels and many even have family-friendly classes where everyone can participate too.

  • Explore your world.

There’s nothing quite like the peace and beauty that the natural world has to offer. Need ideas? The National Wildlife Foundation offers numerous programs and events. Check out options at nwf.org.  Go to discovertheforest.org to find other outdoor treasures near you. Not ready to venture into nature yet? Visit kaboom.org to find playgrounds near you.

With a little effort and change of habits you’ll feel better and be healthier as a family, having fun with those who matter in your life.
