The elation felt by beer aficionados and Wawa patrons around the region after Concord Township gave preliminary approval to the chain of stores request to start selling six-packs of beer in one Delaware County store back in August, soon turned into a long and excruciating wait, Caitlin McCabe writes for philly.com.

After nearly half a year, that wait might finally be coming to an end. During the intervening time, Wawa has been striving to resolve issues relating to the close to two dozen restrictions that were imposed on it by the Concord Board of Supervisors as a condition for it to be allowed to sell beer at the store on Naamans Creek Road in Chadds Ford.

Finally on Tuesday, with some of the restrictions amended, the standstill came to an end. With the situation with the township resolved, Wawa now has to apply for an approval from the state, something the store has yet to do according to spokeswoman Lori Bruce.

Ron Sofranko, principal of Sofranko Advisory Group, a firm which specializes in business planning and the buying and selling of liquor licenses, said that approval is likely. “They already came to terms with the municipality, and that’s a huge step,” Sofranko pointed out.

While each application is considered on an individual basis, the state will deny the applicant only if they are found to have a history of problematic behavior, be it back taxes, felony convictions, or reports of a loud and rowdy restaurant or bar.

“None of those are things Wawa will likely face,” said Sofranko and added that the whole process of being granted an approval by the state usually takes between 45 and 60 days.

On Wednesday, Bruce said that its application for beer sales will stay limited to the Chadds Ford store for now. However, as she mentioned last summer Wawa may “look to expand the offering depending on our experience” at the Delaware County location.
