With its well known reputation as the largest mushroom producer in the country, a lesser known fact is that Chester County actually supplies close to 50 percent of all of the mushrooms consumed nationwide.

Harvesting and growing some of the nation’s tastiest mushrooms is a year-long business, and as the owner the Pietro Mushroom Farm in Kennett Square Chris Alonzo says, it starts as early as 4 a.m.

“Mushrooms will actually be at the grocery store within one to two days,” Alonzo points out. “The shelf life is only about eight to 10 days, so we have to get them to market quickly.”

Being a rural community, Kennett Square has the wealth of natural resources needed to successfully grow mushrooms. Not only that, but being just an easy train route away from several major cities also helps the industry, as the shipping time is a key factor.

While white mushrooms are the most popular, more exotic types can also be found in the neighborhood. Phillips Mushroom Farms is one of the largest specialty growers in the country, offering over seven different varieties which include Oyster, Shiitake, Maitake, Pompom and Eryngii.

“The use of mushrooms is limited only by your imagination,” said General Manager Jim Angelucci. “You can use them in anything.”

With many more mushroom farms located in the mushroom capital of the world, it is no wonder then, that Kennett Square will be ushering in the New Year with a giant mushroom light comprised of thousands of tiny bulbs that will be lowered during the countdown to midnight.

Starting at 6 p.m. with activities aimed at children, the town will welcome the Raising and Lighting of the Mushroom at 8 p.m. in the center of Kennett Square. Even though the mushroom will not actually be dropped until midnight, the opening ceremony provides the perfect opportunity for kids to experience the event as the Mushroom is raised and lit up for the evening.

The Heated Party Tent will also open at 9 p.m. with a $10 cover charge for the entire evening. Good music fans will be able to enjoy the Funsters who will take the stage at 10 pm and will play until 1 am.

If you are looking for a chance to sample the wide variety of mushrooms grown in the county, local producers will also be showcasing their produce at the 2016 Pennsylvania Farm Show.
