Local Presenter Brought in to Host the WXPN Morning Show

Kristen Kurtis, a Philadelphia area native, will succeed the popular morning show host Michaela Majoun on WXPN (88.5 FM). Majoun left the station in June after 25 successful years to focus on writing projects.

A graduate of Bishop Shanahan High School in Downingtown, Kurtis will start her new hosting position at WXPN, the alternative music format, commercial free radio station of the University of Pennsylvania, in October.

Kurtis’ recent assignments have included midday host, assistant program director and music director at a public radio station in Austin, Texas. The new role with WXPN will allow her to use her skills in digital media and experience in improv, sketch and stand-up comedy in the show.

“As one who was raised on Philadelphia radio, returning to the area via 88.5 brings my life and career full circle” said Kurtis. “I am ecstatic, proud, and honored to be joining the prestigious staff at WXPN.”

Sikorsky’s Sale to Lockheed Martin Clears Antitrust Hurdle

Another potential hurdle has been cleared by United Technologies in its sale of Sikorsky Aircraft to Lockheed Martin, as they successfully checked antitrust off the list of requirements to complete the deal.

The waiting period required under U.S. antitrust regulators’ pre-notification program expired on September 23, and federal antitrust agencies have not asked for more information about the $9 billion deal agreed on in July allowing it to go forward.

While significant, this is only one hoop that will Lockheed needs to jump through before the deal can be completely finalized. The deal is still subject to additional regulatory approvals in the U.S. and abroad, although the company has already completed the review process in Korea and Japan.

“We still expect Sikorsky, the transaction, to close with Lockheed around the end of the year,” stated United Technologies’ CEO Greg Hayes. “No surprises, no change there.”

La Comunidad Hispana to Open a New Health Center in Oxford

The community-based nonprofit organization La Comunidad Hispana is opening a new community health center in the Oxford area this December.  This will be the second full-service health center for the Kennett Square based organization, and represents a major expansion of its services in Southern Chester County.

The new center will be in the Oxford Professional Center at 301 N. 3rd Street, and will provide critical health services for insured and uninsured residents of Oxford and the surrounding area. The project was made possible through a combination of federal funding and generous donations from the community.

“We are most grateful to the people of Southern Chester County for their assistance and for the generous financial support that made the expansion possible,” said President and CEO of LCH, Alisa Jones. “The services are vitally needed in this section of the county.”

Presented by the West Chester Downtown Foundation, the West Chester Preservation Awards have reached an important milestone entering its 5th year of recognizing and honoring projects and people that highlight and preserve West Chester’s historic character.

The award aims to encourage the residents, businesses and property owners of the West Chester Borough to preserve the Borough’s historic fabric, and to strengthen the entire community in the process.

The big change this year for attendees at the awards, is the transition from a morning breakfast to an evening reception with wine, beer, and a light buffet catered by local favorite Limoncello Ristorante.

Held at the Chester County Historical Society, the awards ceremony will take place on Thursday, October 22, 2015 at 5:30.  Tickets cost $20 per person and can be purchased here.
