Covered Bridge: Stories From Around Philadelphia Over The Weekend

Speakman's Bridge.

It was a busy weekend for the greater Philadelphia region, and for today’s Covered Bridge we’re bringing you some of the stories you may have missed while you enjoyed a sunny end to an otherwise rainy, cloudy week.

The President was in Wilmington on Saturday where he delivered an emotional eulogy for Beau Biden. From Vanity Fair:

“Here was a scion of an incredible family who brushed away the possibility of privilege for the harder, better reward of earning his own way,” said Obama. “Here was a soldier who dodged glory, and exuded true humility. A prosecutor who defended the defenseless. The rare politician who collected more fans than foes, and the rarer public figure who prioritized his private life above all else.”

The President’s eulogy has been released by the White House and is available here.

Then on Sunday the City of Brotherly Love played host to the Philadelphia International Cycling Classic. At 124 miles, it is the longest single-day race in the U.S.,  which is part of the reason it draws thousands to the streets of Philly each year.  The classic is also notorious for what cyclists call the Manayunk Wall-a challenging incline that serves as the litmus test for true champions. “As the leaders hit the foot of the Wall it was every man for himself. The 41-year-old Horner was among the first to fade — and at the top it was all Carlos Barbero Cuesta.”

Cuesta, of Spain, would go on to win the race handily. Close followers of cycling will also remember the Classic as the site of Lance Armstrong’s professional riding debut. Armstrong won the event in 1993.

The spirit of competition also made its way to Chester County over the weekend as over 3,000 girls participated in the “Girls on the Run 5k” in West Chester. From Chescotimes.com:

More than 3.000 runners gathered at Henderson High School last Saturday to participate in a record breaking, Girls on the Run 5K. With the sun hidden behind overcast skies and humidity climbing, these young athletes started arriving at 7:00am with smiles, enthusiasm, and lots of energy to run, for many, their first 5K. STRIDE, a similar program for boys created by the YMCA of Greater Brandywine, also participated in Saturday’s 5K.

That’s it today for Covered Bridge. Check back in with us tomorrow for more stories, features, and opinions from around that web that you may have missed.
