Dr. Carl H. June of the University of Pennsylvania and Dr. Jeffrey Marrazzo, co-founder and CEO of Spark Therapeutics, will receive top honors from Wayne-based Pennsylvania Bio during its March 12 annual dinner and award celebration at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia.

Pennsylvania Bio is a statewide trade association representing Pennsylvania’s life science industry. Dr. June will receive the 2015 Hubert J.P. Schoemaker Leadership Award which recognizes an outstanding leader in the life sciences community exemplifying the spirit of innovation.

Marrazzo will be presented the 2014 Frank Baldino Bioscience CEO of the Year Award, recognizing CEOs who have demonstrated leadership and active participation to advance the industry.

“Dr. June and Mr. Marrazzo are greatly deserving of these awards,” said Christopher P. Molineaux, president and CEO of Pennsylvania Bio. “The leadership and dedication each has demonstrated over the years have contributed to Pennsylvania’s strength, recognition and advancement in the life sciences on the national and global levels.”

Dr. June, the Richard W. Vague Professor of Immunotherapy in the department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine in Penn’s Perelman School of Medicine and director of Translational Research in Penn’s Abramson Cancer Center, has worked tirelessly to advance cancer therapies, with a hope for a cure.

In 2014, Marrazzo led Spark Therapeutics through a period of substantial growth, establishing the company’s permanent headquarters and manufacturing facilities in Philadelphia and growing the organization from 5 employees to 45.  The firm is working with Pfizer, Inc. to develop a gene therapy treatment for hemophilia B.
