Did You Know?

If you believe the above map from Flowingdata.com, the 315,000 Chester County residents who commute to and from work every day prefer navigating the county’s highways and crooked byways all by themselves.

According to stats cited on the map above, 81 percent of county residents drive to work alone as opposed to carpooling (6%) or using public transportation (3%).

Six percent of county residents shun the daily trek to and from work completely, choosing instead to work from home, presumably alone as well.

More county commuting numbers from a 2008 Chester County Planning Commission report:

  • 57,000 workers commute between Chester and Montgomery Counties everyday while 38,000 residents make the daily shuttle to and from Chester and Delaware County.
  • More county residents commute daily to jobs in Wilmington and New Castle County, Delaware than commute to Philadelphia.
  • Average travel time for to and from work for Chester County residents is around 27 minutes, a number that hasn’t changed much in the last several decades.

Check out how other Delaware Valley counties fared (Hint: not that much better) in Flowingdata.com’s interactive commuter map here.

A draft of Chester County’s 25 year transportation plan published by the county Planning Commission in April of 2014 is here.
