Oxford School District Renames High School Auditorium In Honor Of James S. Herr

Oxford Area High School’s auditorium is now the James S. Herr Auditorium in honor of the founder of Herr Foods, the Chester County Press is reporting.

Herr, who passed away in 2012 at the age of 87, lived in the Oxford district for 60 years and served as a school board president for 12 of those years.

The Press reported board President Donna Arrowood said in a resolution honoring Herr that he was “a constant advocate for providing greater opportunities for students, many of whom went on to long and successful careers as employees of Herr Foods.”

Arrowood also recognized Herr as a “pillar of the local economy and a supporter of his fellow businesspersons, our schools, local arts and recreation programs, and charitable organizations…”.

The board made the dedication during their Dec. 16 meeting.  Herr’s son James M. Herr, attended and thanked the board for the honor.  The patriarch’s quietly successful business career and life are chronicled in the book “Life With Flavor“.

Thousands of people still visit the Nottingham factory to see its Christmas light display at this time of year.
