Exelon Corp. says it is investing seed money in companies pursuing more efficient use of the grid and on Nov. 5 hosted its third Innovation Expo in Baltimore. Exelon Corp manages energy generation in the lower 48 states.

The event was aimed at bringing employees and outside experts together to explore creative solutions to complicated business challenges. The expo explored emerging technologies from drone robotics to smart home devices.

Building on the last expo’s theme of “data driven decisions,” the event focused on the “Internet of things,” a growing field that explores ways to leverage the connectivity of the Internet with a wide range of data devices, including everything from smart thermostats to wifi-connected smart appliances.

“Exelon is making investments in technologies that improve services for our customers and employees,” said Chris Crane, president and CEO.  “We continue to encourage employees across the company to use innovative solutions to drive best-in-class performance and create value for our customers and the communities we serve.”

Employees looked at smart houses and electric vehicles. Exelon says it has partnered with startup companies to leverage Google Glass and that it’s evaluating “Internet of things” technologies to secure resources and optimize productivity.  You can learn more about the conference here.

Exelon Corporation, with local headquarters in Kennett Square, has annual revenue of about $24.9 billion.
