Historical Society State of the Organization Address Tonight

Chester County Historical Society President Rob Lukens (above) will share with the community the society’s vision for the future during a ‘state of the organization’ address set for 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. tonight, Oct. 16.

“Building Communities Through History” is the title of Lukens’ half-hour talk, to be followed by questions and a social hour.  The CCHS will also have copies of its newly minted 2013 annual report and its new volunteer President, Dr. Jane Brigman, will be on hand to meet people.  This free event requires a RSVP by Oct. 10 to [email protected].

CCHS has other special events planned for the community this fall, including History on Tap from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21 at The Whip Tavern, 1383 N. Chatham Rd., Coatesville.

In partnership with the National Iron and Steel Museum, Rebecca Lukens (portrayed by Susannah Brody) will take the tavern back to the time when the U.S. was new and industrialization was gaining momentum.  America’s first woman industrialist will speak about the challenge of being a woman in charge of the Brandywine Ironworks, forerunner to Coatesville’s Lukens Steel, and how she influenced the engines of progress. The program is free but attendees must RSVP to [email protected] by Oct. 15 as space is limited to 75 attendees.

Back to Basics Genealogy – A fresh look at tired sources and techniques – is set for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1 at the CCHS, 225 N. High St.  Kim Bucklaw, assistant archivist, will revisit census and tax records and other seemingly simple records to uncover new data in your family tree.  The cost is $10 for members and $20 for non-members.

A one-day workshop for K-12 educators, Teaching with Primary Resources, is set for 8 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4.  The workshop will help K-12 educators better understand, identify and use primary resources from the digital archives of the Library of Congress in their classrooms.  Pre-registration is through the Chester County Intermediate Unit.

Before it closes Jan. 3 be sure to see the exhibit “Profiles, Chester County Clothing of the 1800s” at the CCHS.  There are more than 40 fine and ordinary examples of outerwear worn by women, men and children showing the evolution of 19th century clothing.
