Red Tape Earns Pennsylvania Low Small Business Grade

By

If you’re feeling the burden of bureaucracy in your small business, you’re not alone. Pennsylvania recently received a D grade in the Thumbtack and Kauffman Foundation business climate rankings, as reported by The Economist.

Specifically, the state got a D for its tax code and a D+ for the business-friendliness of its regulations, with a higher 43 percent of low-income occupations requiring a state license.

Pennsylvania’s poor grade, according to the Economist, is epitomized in the experience of a Philly architect who wasted two weeks chasing after utility maps just to apply to build a stoop for a client — on top of the time he already spent documenting insurance coverage and paying taxes.

“The information exists all over the place and the burden is on me not just to gather it but [to] interpret it,” Ian Toner said in the article. “I’m not going to leave here because of this, but they’re all things that could turn a person off of coming here.”
