While this year’s Fortune 500 list, Fortune Magazine’s list of the 500 largest public United States corporations ranked by total revenue, included just one Chester County company, that lone entry has the distinction of being the largest company in the Delaware Valley to make the list.

6.18.2014 AmerisourceBergen2AmerisourceBergen, the sprawling drug and healthcare Chesterbrook distribution company which serves as a go-between for drug makers and pharmacies, hospitals, and other healthcare providers in the US and Canada, rang up an impressive $89 billion in sales last year, up 11.8% over the previous year.

A significant contributing factor for AmersourceBergens’ big year, according to Fortune, was successfully “stealing [a] client from one of [their] closest competitors.”

“AmerisourceBergen managed to do just that in 2013 when it signed a distribution deal with Walgreens, taking the contract away from Cardinal Health.”

Despite lower profits, a paltry $433 million, down 39% from 2012, The Walgreen win nudged Amerisource up four notches on Fortune’s annual list to number 28, up from 32 in 2013, right behind prestigious corporate names like CitiGroup (#26) and Archers Daniels Midland (#27).

Beyond AmerisourceBergen, several other Delaware Valley companies including Comcast (#44), ARAMARK (#209), Lincoln National (#232), Crown (#213), UHS (#324), UGI (#362) and Airgas (#498) made the prestigious business publication’s annual list.
