The Vanguard Group is one of Chester County’s largest employers, but each day hundreds of its workers are keeping their carbon footprint down by joining together and commuting to and from work via 219 carpools.

The Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission is recognizing Vanguard for its efforts to reduce air pollution and improve air quality with a 2014 Air Quality Excellence Award.

Each year, one public and one private institution are honored for their efforts to improve air quality. The DVRPC gave the public award to the Burlington County (New Jersey) Board of Chosen Freeholders.

The DVRPC recognized Vanguard for promoting alternative commuting options. Vanguard provides a shuttle for employees, supports bicycling by providing bike racks, shower and locker rooms, and participates in the 2013 National Bike Challenge.

The company has also purchased alternative fuel vehicles for its fleet, and has implemented a company sustainability plan. Vanguard also hosts commuter events, carpool meetings, and designates an on-site contact for employee commute inquiries.

The Freeholders took comprehensive steps to improve air quality and reduce air pollution by setting up an employee carpool program. They also installed solar panel and capture methane gas from a landfill to fuel their vehicle fleet.

“Businesses, nonprofits, local governments, and individuals all play important roles in reducing air pollution by cutting waste, conserving energy, and making wise transportation choices,” said Barry Seymour, DVRPC’s executive director. “Cooperation between people and organizations that care about the air we breathe presents our greatest opportunity to ensure cleaner air for our region.”
