Absorption Systems Earns Japanese Patent

Exton-based Absorption Systems announced it has been awarded a Japanese patent to protect its cell-based test systems which help pharmaceutical companies produce safer drugs.

The company’s proprietary CellPort Technologies in vitro test systems help companies developing drugs to definitively predict the risk of clinical drug-drug interactions.

Drug-drug interactions can cause unexpected side effects, drug therapeutic failure, or death. The risk is particularly high among elderly and disabled populations, who take multiple medications. However, nearly all drug-drug interactions can be prevented simply by avoiding potentially unsafe drug combinations.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the nation’s overseer of public health, helped fund development of the company’s transporter knockdown technology through a Small Business Innovation Research grant. FDA scientists worked alongside Absorption’s chief scientist, Dr. Ismael Hidalgo.

The new patent, No. 5324456, extends patent protection beyond the patents previously issued to Absorption Systems in the U.S., Europe and Panama.

“This new patent reinforces our commitment to develop better tools to predict clinical outcomes, improve drug safety and save lives,” Hidalgo said in a company news release.

Clients of Absorption Systems are international pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device manufacturers who use its proprietary test systems to make safer products. The firm’s aim is to help as many international companies as possible identify and overcome absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion and toxicity barriers as they develop medical products.

Absorption Systems, founded in Exton 23 years ago, also has offices in San Diego, CA. and Panama City, Panama.
