The employees at Nave Newell, an engineering firm in Wayne, bring their kids to work once a year to fight against cancer.
What's the best way to begin a day of fundraising? That's right: a bake sale.
What’s the best way to begin a day of fundraising? That’s right: a bake sale.

Laura Kepner wears many hats as the executive assistant to Greg Newell, the founder of Nave Newell, a multidiscipline consulting firm in Wayne that provides civil engineering, surveying, and landscape architectural services throughout the Greater Philadelphia Region.

The most important hat she wears is perhaps the 35-person company’s “director of fun,” the title that makes her responsible for coordinating the special events held in and out of the office.

In that position, her biggest – and undoubtedly most impactful – brainchild is the Alex’s Lemonade Stand and Bake Sale she oversees on Take Your Daughters and Sons to Work Day.

The seventh annual event will take place on the company’s grounds on Thursday, April 28.

“We wanted to come up with something creative that would help the kids give back to the community,” said Kepner. “Greg has such a passion for making a difference in the lives of children, and he had participated in several of the golf outings for Alex’s Lemonade Stand. So we adopted that as our cause.

“It’s hard to keep kids interested in engineering all day, so we have a two-part program on Take Your Daughters and Sons to Work Day. The first part is the bake sale and lemonade stand, where we talk about what our goals are, how to take care of the cash register, and explain to visitors why we support the cause. The second part is more engineering-oriented; kids do a project related to what their parents do in the office.”

This year, Kepner expects 16 children to participate in the event, the most ever.

She said anyone and everyone is invited. Their goal this year is to raise $4,000.
