The West Chester Area School District has broken ground for the $23.6 million Greystone Elementary School, the 11th elementary school in the district, writes Bill Rettew for the Daily Local News.

Construction on the new school was scheduled to start in October. However, according to school district Superintendent Dr. Jim Scanlon, obtaining a sewer permit has held the project up for a month. Even so, the project is expected to be completed by the start of school in the fall of 2021.

“All systems are go for fall 2021,” Scanlon said. “We’re in good shape.”

A short and ceremonial groundbreaking will be held by the district on Monday.

The school is partly in response to the 598 homes currently being built in nearby Greystone Estate. That and other projects are expected to increase the number of students in the district from the current 12,000 to 13,000 by 2025.

“We definitely have to build it because of all the housing construction,” he said.

The new, two-story school will cover 80,000 square feet and will be able to accommodate around 588 students from the West Goshen area.
