Unionville High School graduate Kevin Hovde played basketball at the University of Richmond more than a decade ago, and now, his career as an assistant coach has him on a fast break back to his college alma mater. John O’Connor covered the move for the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

During his time in high school, Hovde received recruiting interest from mostly Division II and Division III programs. But he was determined to play Division I. So, he joined Richmond as a walk-on and then earned a scholarship.

He was a part of coach Chris Mooney’s first full class of recruits, but had to miss a year due to a broken ankle. This led to him being redshirted and starting 10 of the 99 games he played in.

As a senior, he was a member of Richmond’s 2010-11 team that advanced to the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16. Throughout the years, the school left a great impression on the athlete.

”I just loved every part of it,” he said.

After his playing days were over, Hovde joined the coaching ranks and was an assistant at Columbia University and, most recently, the University of San Francisco. When he was offered a job as an assistant at Richmond, it was the interaction with Mooney and his assistants that “really made me want to go and do that,” he said.
