When the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the United Kingdom’s South Central Ambulance Service leaned on King of Prussia-based Qlik to help keep pace with and make sense of the data, writes Brian McKenna for Computer Weekly.

SCAS’s front-line paramedics, who are featured on the television show Inside the Ambulance, and their managers are supported in their work by a business intelligence team that provides information to help managers deliver the ambulance service.

When COVID-19 hit, the data team felt like it was “driving in fog at high speed,” said Simon Mortimore, assistant director for business information at the SCAS NHS Foundation Trust.

The service’s data function had to move at high speed, which it was able to do, thanks to Qlik’s business intelligence software. The Qlik software also helped join up different data stores seamlessly.

“We would struggle if we did everything on our own data, because we’re not sited,” said Vivienne Parsons, specialist business analyst at the SCAS NHS Foundation Trust. “The engine behind Qlik very quickly allows you to join datasets, such as government datasets.”

The business intelligence team also reports to external partners, including local authorities, the fire service, and the police. The team uses Qlik software to send SCAS data to around 70 people across eight agencies.

The team has used Qlik for more than a decade. When they looked at other suppliers, they found that they did not have the same depth of peer user community or the same range of connectors to data stores.

“The technology is the least important thing about all of this,” said Mortimore. “What I like about Qlik is that I never notice it. It never causes me a problem.”
