Recovery Centers of America’s Devon facility is working to keep safe and sober while still having an enjoyable summer, writes Bill Rettew for the Daily Local News.

With students returning home from college and high-schoolers off for summer vacation, the organization wants parents to know the importance of an open, honest dialogue and providing an environment that exposes them to things other than alcohol. Educating kids early can make a difference.

“We are living in an age where kids very early on are bombarded with social media advertisements that in a large part glorify alcohol,” said Steve Wicke, CEO for RCA Devon.

Although Wicke acknowledges that drinking responsibly is not a problem, a family history of addiction means that kids could be at a higher risk.

“Instead of filling the void, fill the soul,” said Julie Toy, alumni coordinator at RCA Devon. “Having the conversation with kids gives them power to say ‘No’ and that it’s okay. Let them do the talking, so that way they feel safe without judgment.”

RCA Devon offers many treatment options, including detox and residential, outpatient, and virtual rehabilitation.
