Spring Quality, a six-year-old gelding from George Strawbridge Jr.’s Augustin Stable in Cochranville, sprang a huge upset by winning the Manhattan Stakes on the undercard of last weekend’s Belmont Stakes, writes Nicole Russo for the Daily Racing Forum.

The horse was making his first start against Grade 1 competition in the Manhattan and won despite 18-1 odds of doing so. After being ahead of just two horses at the quarter pole, he managed to push through, finishing by a neck in the photo finish.

The win increased Spring Quality’s career bankroll to $925,797.

“We saved ground on the first turn, and I loved where he was down the backside,” said Graham Motion, Spring Quality’s trainer. “He had to swing a little wide coming off the bend, but he’s really special.”
