From a young age, Ashley Mendenhall could often be found in her backyard practicing hitting. That is until the balls started to disappear into the trees and high grass, and she lost too many softballs to continue this ritual.

Now a senior at Coatesville High School, Mendenhall’s powerful hitting aided her team in clinching its share of the Ches-Mont League for the first time since 1985. According to Michael Bryant of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Mendenhall, a La Salle recruit, is batting .500 with 35 hits – 20 of which went for extra bases, including 9 home runs – 37 RBIs and 28 runs. She boasts an impressive on-base percentage of over .500 and a slugging percentage of 1.042.

Hitting isn’t Mendenhall’s only talent. Her father Bill Mendenhall, who has doubled as her and many of her teammates’ coach since Little League, said that she’s also a key player defensively behind the plate with a fielding percentage of .980.

Mendenhall won the first District One playoff game of her career this season, and although the team was eventually eliminated from the District One playoffs, the Red Raiders have new life in the PIAA playoffs. Coatesville faces Hazleton Monday afternoon at Wilkes University in the first round of the PIAA Class 6A tournament.
